Ths success of Quickspin’s 2017 release Sakura Fortune was somewhat unexpected. It’s undeniably a well-made game, but back then we had concerns about it standing out from the crowd. Well, it did – and the Mulan-like main character seems to have caught the attention of many players. In 2022, Quickspin is back for a sequel, and it seems mechanical innovation is all-important this time around. Sakura Fortune 2 is bigger, more volatile, and with winnings going up to a whopping 22,482x.
The graphics have been given a nice overhaul as well. The focus is still squarely on the titular Sakura Princess, and the large stacked Wilds she acts as are still present in-game. However, the overall artwork and visuals simply look 5 years younger. The characters look sharper than ever, and the calming atmosphere Quickspin was going for is much more palpable.
The original game used a fairly standard 5×4 grid and classic active paylines. Quickspin Sakura Fortune 2 is completely different in that regard. It seems the main change was the core gameplay while the trademark features are still present and accounted for.
Anyway, the base game board is not a square grid. There are 5 reels as before, but not all of them have the same number of rows. Instead, slot positions are arranged in a 3-4-4-4-3 pattern. This design makes the game look unique, but it doesn’t fundamentally alter the mechanics.
In essence, the goal is to arrange matching symbols from left to right. All winning combinations have to start at the leftmost reel, so the 3-row bottleneck on the first reel complicates things a bit. Thankfully, however, it doesn’t matter which row a symbol appears in. You do not need to follow pre-made paylines or ways to win. As long as you have matching symbols on at least reels 1-3, you’ll get a reward. Of course, snagging 4 or more symbols in a single combination wins more.
As far as Sakura Fortune 2 features are concerned, there are both old favourites and new ideas. Let’s start with the big ones.
Sakura Wilds were the more memorable stars of Qucispin Sakura Fortune. In addition to substituting for any other paying symbols, these appear strictly in large stacks of 5 or reels 2, 3, or 4. If a Wild covers the entire reel, you’ll get a free respin while that Wild stays in place. Better yet, the Wild stacks will sometimes nudge a position up or down, increasing the odds of success.
The next important symbol is the golden Scatter, which can be triggered anywhere on the grid. If you land 3 on reels 2, 3, and 4, you get some Sakura Fortune 2 free spins. Specifically, you win 9, 10, or 11 for 3, 4, or 5 scatters, respectively. Once you hit 3 on the middle reels, reels 1 and 4 will each get a respin for a chance to get more free spins. This continues until you get no additional Scatters or you land all 5.
During the Sakura Fortune 2 bonus round, Wilds will always nudge to cover all 5 rows. If one covers the entire reel, it will lock in place for the duration of the free spins round. If 3 Wilds cover reels 2, 3, and 4, you get a 3x multiplier on all subsequent wins in the bonus round.

The game separates its symbols into two types: mediums and low-paying. Presumably, high payouts can only be snagged using special features.
The four coins serve as low-paying symbols. Medium ones include the Jizo statue and the Koi statues. The three characters – Yoshida, Tomoe, and Sensei – offer better overall returns.
This all makes for a fairly volatile slot. You can expect to only get small wins during regular play, with huge wins hitting every now and then. The base RTP for Sakura Fortune 2 is a rather average 96.03%.

The massive improvements of the Sakura Fortune 2 online slot over its predecessor are quite indicative of Quickspin’s growth as a creative team. Just about everything is a massive step forward – though some decisions are not as obvious improvements as others.
For example, we never quite got that sakura Fortune was trying to be remembered as particularly volatile. Yet the second iteration has variance turned up to the max, which will inevitably alienate some fans.
That’s not a complaint so much as a description of how Sakura Fortune 2 works. It’s a title with more volatility than you’ll know what to do with, but it’s also quite fun and creative at times.
